Marriage In America
A
healthy marriage is the matrix of civilization, and through it the
good of a culture is transmitted to the next generation. However,
we are experiencing a nation-wide marriage crisis in America.
People marrying today have a fifty percent chance of divorcing.
In some professions the risk is even higher. Those working in
the medical field, from doctors to physician’s assistants, have a
60% chance of divorcing. This has changed the way we experience
family as a culture.
In 1940, 90% of Americans lived in a family, defined as two or more
people living together who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption.
By 1970 that had dropped to 81%. And by 2003 it was down to
67.8%.
Researchers have discovered the following effects of marriage versus
divorce:
- Married people live longer than unmarried or divorced people.
- Married people are more successful in their careers, earn more,
and have more wealth.
- Children of married couples tend to be more academically successful,
more emotionally stable, and more often assume leadership roles.
- Children with married parents have the lowest odds of poverty
out of all family arrangements.
Happily married employees increase profitability, while unhappily
married employees decrease profitability.
- Happily married employees are healthier, have improved immune
system functioning and can handle stress better.
- Happily married couples are more loyal and stable employees, with
less job turnover, less absenteeism, and greater dependability.
